America wants manufacturing back. But decades after dismantling the ecosystems that produced skilled workers, who will teach the next generation what we’ve lost?
Mike Rowe recently appeared with Bill Maher talking about America’s skilled labor shortage. We’ve heard the statistics. We know the numbers are alarming. And Mike has done an extraordinary job of keeping this issue in front of the American public.
But maybe it’s time to stop talking about the statistics and start talking about how we got here.
And while we’re at it, perhaps it’s time to stop blaming parents for telling their kids they needed to go to college.
What were they supposed to do? The jobs went away.
For decades, we sent American manufacturing overseas. Plants closed. Jobs disappeared. And in cities built around manufacturing, entire ecosystems disappeared with them.
I grew up in Detroit. Manufacturing wasn’t simply something that happened inside a factory. Those plants supported machine shops, tool-and-die companies, suppliers, trucking companies, restaurants, small businesses and entire communities. Generations of families built their lives around industries that made things.
But those ecosystems created something else that was much harder to see—and something we are only now beginning to understand the value of.
They created a living chain of knowledge.
People learned from people who had spent years doing the work. A young machinist worked beside someone who had already made thousands of parts. An apprentice electrician learned from a journeyman. A mechanic learned to recognize a problem not only from what an instrument told him, but from a sound, a vibration or something that simply didn’t feel right.
They learned the specifications, but they also learned everything that existed between the specifications.
Eventually, those younger workers became the experienced ones, and somebody learned from them.
Then we broke the chain.
Thirty or Forty Years Later
Now America is talking about bringing manufacturing back.
We can build plants. We can buy equipment. We can invest billions of dollars in new technology. We can create incentives, offer scholarships and encourage young people to consider careers in the skilled trades.
We can even bring the orders back.
There’s just one enormous problem.
A lot of the people who knew how to do the work aren’t here anymore.
I recently heard about a manufacturer whose situation illustrates this problem perfectly. He owns the manufacturing plant. He has the machines and the tools. He has the ability to bring in business. There are orders he could be filling.
And he’s basically screwed. Not because he doesn’t have the equipment. Because he doesn’t have enough people with the knowledge and experience required to use that equipment to produce what his customers need.
There is an enormous difference between knowing how to operate a machine and knowing how to make something with it. An experienced person understands tolerances, thresholds, materials, adjustments and the countless small decisions that come from years of actually doing the work. How much is too much. How little is too little. What a particular material will tolerate. When something needs adjusting. When everything looks right on paper but experience tells you something isn’t right.
A manual can tell you how a machine operates. It cannot give you 30 years of judgment.
You Can’t Hand Someone 30 Years of Experience on Monday Morning
That may be one of the most overlooked consequences of what happened to American manufacturing.
We didn’t just offshore jobs.
We interrupted the transfer of knowledge from one generation to the next.
And that distinction matters.
When a plant closed, the loss wasn’t limited to the number of people collecting a paycheck there. The machinist found another occupation. The tool-and-die maker retired. The maintenance technician moved away. The supplier closed. The apprentice never got hired because there was no longer anyone who needed an apprentice.
Eventually, fewer children grew up surrounded by people doing those jobs. Fewer parents saw those careers as reliable paths for their children because, in many communities, they weren’t.
So yes, parents encouraged their kids to go to college. Again, what were they supposed to do? The economic ecosystem that had supported generations of skilled workers was disappearing around them.
Then 30 or 40 years passed.
Those experienced workers grew older. Many retired. Some died. And in too many cases, there wasn’t another generation standing beside them absorbing everything they had learned.
We lost more than labor. We lost knowledge.
The Difference Between Knowledge and Judgment
There are things we can teach relatively quickly.
We can teach someone how to use a tool. We can explain a process. We can teach safety procedures, specifications and technical requirements. We can create training programs and apprenticeships.
But experience creates something different. It creates judgment.
Judgment is the experienced machinist knowing that a tolerance may technically be acceptable but is going to create a problem three steps later. It’s the electrician recognizing something unusual before it becomes dangerous. It’s the welder understanding how a material is going to react because they’ve watched it happen hundreds of times. It’s the mechanic hearing a sound and knowing where to start looking.
That knowledge is extraordinarily difficult to quantify because much of it lives inside the person who acquired it. And when that person leaves without passing it on, we don’t simply lose a worker. We lose a library.
Bringing Manufacturing Back Is Only Half the Job
There is tremendous momentum behind rebuilding American manufacturing, strengthening domestic supply chains, investing in infrastructure and creating the next generation of American industry.
I support it.
But buildings, machines and capital alone do not create manufacturing capability.
People do.
And that means we have to think differently about the skilled labor shortage.
Yes, we need more young people entering the trades. We need apprenticeships. We need technical education. We need employers willing to train. We need scholarships and organizations willing to introduce people to opportunities they may never have considered. But recruitment alone cannot repair a succession chain that has been broken for decades.
We also have to ask how we preserve the knowledge that remains.
How do we reconnect experienced tradespeople with the generations coming behind them? How do we expose children to these careers early enough for curiosity to develop? How do we rebuild pathways between schools, employers, unions, trade organizations, mentors and communities? And how do we make sure the knowledge still residing in the hands and minds of experienced American workers doesn’t disappear when they do?
Those questions are becoming every bit as important as how many jobs are currently unfilled.
From Skilled Labor Shortage to Skilled Knowledge Shortage
Mike Rowe is right to keep sounding the alarm. America needs people willing to talk about this problem loudly enough that employers, educators, policymakers, parents and young people pay attention. But perhaps we’re ready for the next part of the conversation.
We know there is a shortage. Now we need to understand what created it.
Because America isn’t facing only a skilled labor shortage. We are facing a skilled knowledge shortage.
And solving that problem requires more than filling vacancies. It means rebuilding an ecosystem where knowledge, experience and opportunity can once again move naturally from one generation to another.
That is one of the conversations behind what we are building with Hands That Build America.
We certainly don’t claim to have all the answers. But we believe the questions matter.
How do we introduce the next generation to the people and industries that build the world around them? How do we preserve the knowledge of the people who have spent their lives mastering their craft? How do we reconnect generations that, through decades of economic change, became disconnected from one another?
Because bringing manufacturing back to America is one thing.
Bringing the knowledge forward may be the harder part.
